Okay Daily Courier, we have some beef now. Your April 18th article says that “Poker online gambling is illegal.” Well, I have some news for you. It’s actually not. It’s not the gambling that’s illegal at all, it’s the funding of it by banks that is illegal. Secondly, no one says internet poker gambling, it’s either internet poker, or online gambling, sometimes online poker, but never the journalistically abhorrent internet poker gambling.

Then you go on to say that millions of Americans play it anyway. Again, it’s said as if in bad faith to those who choose to do it, as if they’re the ones breaking the law, when in reality it’s the banks funding the transactions that are breaking the law, and the players are only conduits for the banks to break the law.

Wait a second, that sounds a lot like. A lot like Wall Street, where people speculate on the value of something, wager on it, then buy or sell it depending on that speculation. Poker strategy doesn’t always start at the table. If you pay attention, you can start getting reads on opponents before anyone’s even taken a seat. Before a tournament starts, there’s usually a short time where the players gather around and wait to get their seating assignments, and if you keep an eye on players while everyone’s milling around, you can generally start picking up on peoples’ styles.

When you’re down to just 10 big blinds, chances are if you’re entering a pot, you’re entering it with hole cards that you plan on going all the way with. The point I’m trying to get across is that you’re not looking to throw in one of your big blinds, and then fold out. It’s just bad money management at the poker table.

Let’s say you have 100 in chips. The blinds are 5/10 and you make a small raise under the gun, about 20 in chips. The table folds around to you and you end up getting shoved on by a much bigger stack. He puts in his 1000 chips, and you have to decide what to do. Do you call or fold?

At this point, with such a short stack, it would be inequitable to fold here. You should be playing all or nothing poker at this point. In our example, our initial raiser folded to the all-in bet, and ended up losing two valuable big blinds. That’s a sure way to blind out and a great way not to play the short stack. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

Being pot committed. If you’re going to go into a big pot, you’d better be ready to go all in. There will be situations in online poker where it’s necessary to re-evaluate just how valuable your hand is. When faced with a big pot, many players will get excited by the amount of money that they stand to win, but they don’t look at the risks that are involved. A big pot generally means one of two things-either a few players are certain that they have the winning hand or a lot of players think that they could win.

If you’re going to join up in a fight for a big pot, be ready to go in all the way. You’ve got to have a monster poker hand because with a lot of money in the pot, it’s very likely to go all the way to showdown.

There are a lot more opponents to have to try to bluff, and the more online poker opponents that there are in a hand, the less likely it is that all of them will fold. But a word of advice, and this is one of those exceptions to the rules. When you’re sandbagging a weak player in a tournament, it may be profitable immediately. And that may make it worth itonly because in tournaments, it’s chips or diet that’s the mentality. So, you have to make the best of the situations given to you. But in a ring game, just keep letting him feed the table the money. He’ll do it on his own without you having to probe him with moves.
