Halloween is a fun holiday filled with traditions. Though they seem commonplace to us now, clothing like the undead and begging for goodies door-to-door is actually an unusual thing to do! See how these customs came to be, and what they mean now.
Halloween’s Celtic Origin
The holiday that germinated into Halloween was first observed more than 2,000 years ago by the Celtic individuals, who addressed it Samhain. The Samhain fete served as the New Year for the Celtic citizenry, as their calendars began on November 1. During Samhain they celebrated the fall harvesting and the approaching of wintertime with large balefires. In the bonfires they committed crops and animals to the Celtic immortals. The Celts also put on beast skins and heads during the Samhain bonfires, which is where the Halloween custom of costumes arose.
Halloweens Christian Source
In the 600’s A.D., November 1 was delegated by the Pope to be All Saints Day; a day to celebrate and honour Christian saints and martyrs. It is thought that Pope Boniface IV took November 1 as All Saints Day to substitute the pagan Samhain festival with a church-approved occasion. All Saints Day became noted as “All Hallows Day” due to the Middle English word for it, which was ‘Alholowmesse.’ Thus, the night before All Hallows Day became noted as “All Hallow’s Eve.” The church subsequently assigned November 2 as “All Souls’ Day,” a day to honor loved ones who have passed on. During All Souls’ Day parades in England, “soul cakes” were a form of Halloween treats handed out to unfortunate people in return for a promise that they would implore for one-time family members.
Some 36 million American children go trick-or-treating every Halloween, but most probably don’t recognize that the practice was once called getting a-souling. In Spain, houses would present needy citizens soul cakes in return for a promise to pray for the psyches of dead relatives. Safe to say: the soul cake savored nothing like Candy Corn. Cutting up pumpkins, then again, comes from an Irish legend. Meager Jack, the history goes, imprisoned the demon in a tree and etched a cross into the tree. The demon took revenge by having Jack forever roam the Earth at night. The Irish engraved turnips, but Americans made the jack-o-lantern out of something more readily accessible: pumpkins.
German beer consumption, meanwhile, has slumped from an average of 142.7 litres a head each year in 1990 to a record low of 111.7 liters last year. Eight years ago consumption stood at 125.6 liters. The fall in beer consumption in Germany has already sparked a major shakeout in the nation’s beer business with smaller breweries closing their doors or being taken over by larger rivals. But already in May, retailers began stocking up their supplies ahead of the start of the soccer championships and the European summer sporting season. Breweries are hoping that the trend to higher beer consumption during the European championships will continue through to the Beijing Olympics in August. This combination of sporting events has brewers hopeful that beer consumption per head this year could edge back up to the 2006 level of about 116 liters.Public fan gatherings a boon to brewersA boon to the breweries has the emergence of public viewing areas at the World Cup.In a sense, access to the electricity supply for a television screen and somewhere to keep the crates of beer cold are the only key components for creating public viewing areas. This means that in addition to major vantage points such as Berlin’s historic Brandenburg Gate, bars, restaurants, street corners and even vacant blocks of land have been transformed into areas for fans to gather and watch the games.Bildunterschrift: All that’s needed is for the national eleven to advanceStill, other factors will determine if it is a successful European Championship for the German brewers. For one, there is the weather, which according to forecasts is to turn cooler and wetter from Wednesday onwards.Perhaps more importantly, though, German captain Michael Ballack’s team needs to keep the Germans’ hopes alive of their first European championship title since 1996 by progressing towards the final in Vienna on June 29.”The national eleven also has to contribute,” said Huhnholz.

What is the advantage of these new half sugar and half synthetic baking sugars that are on the market? These drink products made with the sugar carbs and synthetic sweeteners and foods marketed and eaten by our kids, does it really give the consumer that much more of an advantage?
There was a national news story on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brocaw (11.08.04) on the waters in Colorado not being so “clean”. High estrogen was found to be in the waters and streams, and it was changing the biology of the fish. In the report, the last statement was that they did not know what the long term outcome of this contamination would be in humans…let see, why are women who are susceptible to cancer told not to take birth control pills… could it be that high estrogen levels are a known contributer to breast cancer and suspected in other types of cancers as well?
Okay, so if our drinking water has this characteristic, what else has these characteristics? Did you know that Sugar is a know estrogenic? Why… Sugar, which breaks down to glucose, goes into the blood streams, and escorts estrogen to the heart muscle and to the other cells. Glucose is a companion to a lot of chemicals in the body, and to some chemicals that shouldn’t be in the body in high supply.
So if Glucose can escort estrogen, and you have an abundance of estrogen in the water that you drink, and the birth control pill that you take, and you are drinking and eating foods that have an abundance of elements that cause the glucose to rise in your blood, doesn’t it stand to reason, that you would increase your chances and risks of cancer?
So, back to the original question, what is the advantage of a sugar and synthetic sweetener? The sugar will spike your glucose levels, and the synthetic has a better escort system to make the body absorb chemicals it was never designed to absorb, for example, chlorine, or glutimates that increase the production of insulin. Both chlorine and glutamic proteins are found in the top synthetic sweeteners used in the United States by manufacturers. Add on top of this, processed flours to make the cakes, cookies, and pies taste better, and you have even more “sugar” going into your system.
No one gains anything from these hybrid sweeteners, especially those who are already suffering from blood glucose issues and children. We don’t know what these synthetic sweeteners will do to those who consume them for 20 to 30 years, but we do know that the probability of cancer is extremely high for each of us, including our kids, here in the U.S., where health of a food product is not necessarily an important factor in marketing.
