Diets: The Hidden Truth
04.12.09 | Comments Off
Category: Uncategorized

Quick, what’s the first thought that pops into your head when you hear the word “diet?” Probably that when you’re on one, you feel like you’re going to “d-i-e” right?!

WHAT EXACTLY IS A DIET?

Most people believe that a diet is something that involves pain, suffering, and giving up foods we enjoy. Some of the symptoms of “being on a diet” usually include being hungry and cranky all the time. But this is not really the true meaning of the word and if you get hung up on all the negative stuff, you’ll miss the entire concept.

Webster’s dictionary defines a “Diet” as:

a : food and drink regularly provided or consumed;
b : habitual nourishment;
c : the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person for a special reason.

In other words, it’s what we regularly or habitually eat and drink to nourish our bodies. That’s not so bad. But here’s the hidden truth that will turn your understanding of diets on its head and practically guarantee that you’ll reach whatever weight goal you desire: Being “on a diet” really means having a plan for your eating instead of eating according to any spur-of-the-moment mood or habit. That’s it!

This is so simple. But then most basic truths are. However, it’s extremely powerful if you take the time to think about it and fully understand what it means. Let me say it again so that you don’t miss it: Being on a diet really means having what you eat controlled by a PLAN instead of by your moods or habits.

WHY MOST DIETS DON’T WORK

The reason most diets don’t work is because of the extreme measures most of them require. Some force you to give up everything except cabbage soup, or everything except meat and meat products, or everything except salads. This is not only monotonous, it’s also pretty harsh — not only harsh to stick with, but harsh on your physical wellbeing as well.

True, a monotonous diet is often effective at losing weight over the short term (ie: the Atkins Diet) but you have to wonder if you aren’t giving up a part of your health in the process (ie: ketosis, acidosis, etc). Many conventional diets put the body in a highly acidic state which can create a number of health problems.

Our bodies are designed to absorb vitamins, nutrients, and minerals from a wide variety of foods and a monotonous diet runs directly counter to that. It simply isn’t natural, and is the main reason most conventional diets just don’t work in the long run.

THE RIGHT WAY TO DIET

The right way to diet is to think of dieting as a system of correct eating. Your diet should include a balanced plan for a variety of foods, taken in moderate amounts, and in the proper combination. Eat when you’re hungry, not when the clock says it’s lunch or dinner time.

So forget the fad diets that don’t work and get started on planning a diet that you can stick with over the long term. This is the balanced approach to good health and nutrition, and it’s an approach that you can live with for the rest of your life.

Keeping Your Passwords Secure
As the web has evolved, so have the methods of collecting personal information. A large number of websites require visitors to register to gain access or participate. While the need for registration is understandable, tracking user names and passwords can be burdensome. Consider using software to store your passwords, in a safe accessible manner.

Most websites have privacy policies, but the value of privacy statements are only as honorable as the people behind the websites. Here are suggestions for keeping passwords and your information secure:

1.) change your password frequently
2.) never share your password with anyone
3.) try to choose a password so it doesn’t need to be written down, but not so obvious others would easily guess the password
4.) be sure your password is at least 6 characters
5.) don’t use a password containing all the same characters
6.) don’t send your password via email or provide it over the phone
7.) don’t use pet, family or friend names
8.) don’t use your telephone number, zip code or address
9.) use a different password for each account
10.) don’t use user name
11.) deactivate accounts for terminated employees
12.) don’t allow shared accounts
13.) password contains upper, lowercase letters, non-letter characters and numbers

Being Optimistic v. Wearing Rose-Colored Glasses
04.11.09 | Comments Off
Category: Uncategorized

DEFINITIONS

Being optimistic - Believing the doctrine that this world is the best possible world; having an inclination to put the most favorable construction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome

Rose-colored glasses - Putting the most favorable construction upon actions events and people and expecting the best possible outcome when common sense dictates this isn’t possible or the reality is that it isn’t happening. Refusing to take action when you should and just hoping for the best. Denying what you’re experiencing.

COMPARISONS

Taking action to make things change vs. Hoping things will change

Demanding respect vs. Wishing someone would treat you better

Making your dreams come true vs. Just dreaming

EXAMPLE

Randolph approached his sales job with optimism and enthusiasm. He expected to close sales and didn’t let rejection get him down. He considered each rejection one step closer to a sale. If he didn’t get a sale, or had a big disappointment, he distracted himself, did something fun, and didn’t consider it anything personal about himself or his capabilities. Then he tried again. He attributed a failure to something not personal, not permanent, and not pervasive. He had an optimistic attitude, especially in performance situations, but he worked on his skills too. He was in touch with reality.

When Melanie got sick, she just hoped it would go away and didn’t see a doctor. When someone mistreated her she wished it away, or convinced herself that she was misperceiving, or pretended it wasn’t happening. When it became apparent her company was failing and that most would be fired, everyone started to interview for a new job except Melanie. She kept thinking it wouldn’t happen and everything would work out well. This was flying in the face of reality.

KEY POINT

“Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.” ~ Charles Swindoll

BENEFITS

When you use learned optimism instead of rose-colored glasses you know when to continue and when not to. Learned optimism is the facilitator of all the emotional intelligence competencies and makes your life work better. Wearing rose-colored glasses keeps you out of touch with reality, and unable to be proactive or responsive when you need to.

Me and Omega 3

I have never liked fish. In fact, other then Tuna, mixed with mayo and chopped onions, I would say I am afraid of fish. I was once a lifeguard at a lake and every time I had to go in the water, I would move my arms and legs around like I was having a seizure just to keep the little fish in the lake away. I am in fact afraid of all sea life from Trout to Goldfish, so you can imagine my response when my doctor suggested taking fish oil. He gave me a copy of an article about the value of Omega 3 fish oil pills in reducing the risk of heart attacks. I was unimpressed and when evaluating taking the fish pills verses the heart attack, I chose the heart attack.
At my next visit, my doctor asked if I had tried the fish pills and when I wrinkled my nose and shook my head, he produced another article suggesting that there was a link between a reduction in cancer and the fish pills. Still I chose cancer.

He then suggested that flax seed oil was a worthy alternative to the fish pills and would provide me with the same omega 3 fatty acids, that he so desperately thought I needed. I had recently seen my mother munching on some flax seed chips, which pretty much closed the door on the flax seed option.

You can then imagine my joy when I recently read that there was little to suggest that Omega 3 fatty acids reduced the risk of any single type of cancer.

While it was true that the Eskimos of Greenland had a very low occurrence of coronary heart disease (I assume they ate a lot of fish), I was overjoyed to hear that high levels of mercury were discovered in fish. Swordfish, shark and mackerel had particularly large amounts of mercury, however fish sticks did not. Regardless I had found the evidence I needed and in future doctor visits whenever the issue was raised, I would invoke the findings from an ambiguous EPA study that supported my growing concern of getting mercury poisoning. In truth, I still don’t actually know why mercury is bad for you but as sited in the Fishing Regulations Booklet, if I need more information, I can always contact my local health department.

The Euro Millions Lottery and Something You Might Not Recognize. How it Operates, Who it Applies to and How You May Encounter that Tremendous European Lotto

Category: Wagering

The Euro lotto was to begin with set up by the national lotteries of France, the United Kingdom and Spain and was revealed in Feb-04. The 1st lottery draw was on Feb 13th 04 in Paris. The United Kingdom, France and Spain were the only nations partaking in the beginning but lotteries from Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Republic of Ireland likewise became active on October 2004.

The Euro millions lotto or the Euro lotto, as it is usually acknowledged, pools the lottery ticket receipts of the nine partaking European countries awarding a huge Euro Millions jackpot. With the number of countries joining the EU on the increase, that will without a doubt lead to even more countries partaking in the Euro lottery. A growth in the number of individuals partaking in the Euro Lotto will lead to a prolonged increase of the already sizeable Euro Lotto jackpots.

Q. How To Play The Euro Lotto

Every participant must select five main numbers from 1 to 50 and 2 Lucky-star numbers from one to nine. During the lottery draw, 5 main plus two lucky-star numbers are then selected at random from two lottery draw machines containing numbered lotto balls.

European Lottery Awards

The probabilities of scooping up the Euro Lottery jack-pot is a far-off 1 in 76 million but the likelihood of winning a money prize is a fairly decent one : 24. If the “jackpot” is not won in a given lotto draw, it is carried forward to the next lottery draw which results in an ever increasing jackpot value. New regulations brought in on the 9 February 2007 limit the number of consecutive roll overs to 11, with the jack-pot rolling down to lower value levels in the eleventh lottery draw if the prize is not won.

The new regulations likewise initiated Euro Millions Super Draw which happen twice annually and offer jack-pots in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super Draws is that the “jackpot” must be collected during the week of the lotto draw; this means, if there is no ticket corresponding, all the drawn numbers then the top prize will then be distributed to the lotto ticket bearer(s) on the succeeding winning prize level.

How to Choose Matching Eyeglasses

Here are some ways you can choose the correct spectacles frame for your face:
Colour of the frames:
Light haired persons should opt for delicate shades, clear or metal frames, leaving the horn-rims and dramatic shades for people with a darker complexion. Basically, with regards to frame color, emphasis can be made on eye color by repeating it in a deeper shade, or alternatively the frames could match the hair color.
Picking Out the shape of the frames according to the shape of the face
Oval face: The oval face is the complete face with perfectly balanced proportions. Any shape of frame looks good on it. However you can think about for spectacle frames that are as broad as (or wider than) the broadest part of the face, or walnut-shaped frames that are not too deep or too narrow.
Round face shape: A round face shape has curvilinear lines with the width and length of the face in the same proportions. To make the face appear thinner and longer, examine angular narrow spectacle frames to lengthen the face, a clear bridge that widens the eyes and frames that are wider than they are deep, such as a rectangular shape.
Long shaped face: The long face shape is longer than it is wide and has a long straight cheek line and sometimes a longish nose. To make the face appear shorter and more balanced, try out frames that have a top-to-bottom depth, decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face or a low bridge to shorten the nose.
Square face shape: A square face has a strong jaw line and a broad forehead, plus the width and length are in the same proportions. To make the square face feel longer and soften the angles, examine narrow frame styles, frames that have more width than depth and narrow ovals.
Heart-shaped shaped face or a triangle face: A heart-shaped face shape has a very broad top third and a very small bottom third. To minimise the width of the top of the face, try out on frames that are broader at the bottom, very light colors and materials and rimless frame styles.
