Graduation Gowns
The commencement ceremony is one of the most important periods of one’s academic life and for this reason; a special garment has to be worn to commemorate the event. Graduation gowns form the major part of the official attire, along with the graduation cap and a hood. The academic gown is a flowing robe-like garment that usually sports two broad front pleats running down the front alongside additional smaller pleats. The gown is fluted at the rear across the back and shoulders. This serves to give the garment shape as it drapes the body.

The material used is often light weight and does not easily wrinkle The most commonly used color for graduation gowns is black, but some institutions may have different colored gowns that are in conformity width the official colors. The gowns often vary in structure depending on the degree. The undergraduate gown has wider sleeves while those by graduate student have full length sleeves. The gowns are worn with headgear known as mortar board or graduation cap. An additional piece of material known as a hood is suspended at the back of the gown.
