The commencement ceremony is one of the most important periods of one’s academic life and for this reason; a special garment has to be worn to commemorate the event. Graduation gowns form the major part of the official attire, along with the graduation cap and a hood. The academic gown is a flowing robe-like garment that usually sports two broad front pleats running down the front alongside additional smaller pleats. The gown is fluted at the rear across the back and shoulders. This serves to give the garment shape as it drapes the body.

The gowns are worn with headgear known as mortar board or graduation cap. An additional piece of material known as a hood is suspended at the back of the gown.
